WHAT DOES IT DO

BOTOX is not just for fine lines, wrinkles and crow’s fee anymore.

In recent years it has proven to have numerous medical benefits, TIME Magazine even called it “The Drug That’s Treating Everything“. Among these benefits include the treatment of TMJ from Clenching or Grinding and Headaches, including Migraines.

For jaw pain, Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the medical therm used for bruxism or teeth grinding/clenching. The symptoms arise from how we handle feelings of stress in our lives. Individuals who clench or grind their teeth during the day often do not notice that they are doing it. The habit is even more uncontrollable at night while suffers are asleep. BOTOX works by relaxing the overused master muscles in the jaw. When these muscles are unable to move, they no longer are able to clench or grind, allowing time to heal and repair. During this resting phase, symptoms of TMJ are relieved. Botox can last up to 5 months. The more often a patient receives treatment, the more effective it becomes.

BOTOX relieves the chief complaint of jaw pain and further aids in the relief of secondary pain that may radiate form the jaw up to the ears, through the shoulders and down the neck and back.

For headaches and migraines, BOTOX is the first and only FDA-approved preventive treatment for chronic migraines. Unlike acute treatments, which are taken to treat a headache or migraine once it’s already begun, BOTOX prevents headaches and migraines before they even start.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Every patient of ours is encouraged to ask questions and be as educated as possible regarding our treatments. Therefore, it is important to me to take the time before and after all appointments to ensure that we answered any questions that you may have and review the expectations of the procedures. The initial consultation is often 30-45 minutes, depending on the patient, and involves a detailed discussion of your cosmetic concerns and our treatment options. We will also review your medical history, including allergies, medications and any condition that wouldn’t make you a good candidate for BOTOX. This visit is intended to be a comprehensive and therefore allows for much quicker visits in the future. However, anytime a patient has additional questions, the visit is always complimentary.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is BOTOX?

BOTOX is part of a group of drugs known as biologics—biologic medicines are made from living things. BOTOX® is a purified protein that is made from a type of bacteria called Clostridium botulinum
type A.

BOTOX is injected to prevent headaches in adults with Chronic Migraine who have 15 or more headache days each month with headache lasting 4 hours or more each day in people 18 years or older. It is not known whether BOTOX is safe or effective to prevent headaches in patients with migraine who have 14 or fewer headache days each month (episodic migraine).

In clinical trials, BOTOX provided a significant reduction in headache days after the first treatment. After the second treatment (at 24 weeks), BOTOX prevented 8 to 9 headache days a month (vs 6 to 7 for placebo). You may start to feel results as early as 4 weeks. Over the course of 2 treatment sessions, you should notice a reduction in headache days.

What is a BOTOX treatment like?

BOTOX is injected by a Medical Provider into 7 specific areas in the head and neck with very fine needles. The injections take about 15 minutes, and involve 31 total injections. You may experience mild discomfort. People say the injections feel like tiny pinches or pinpricks.

How often will I need BOTOX treatment?

BOTOX injections are given every 12 weeks by your Medical Provider. For 2 treatments (at 24 weeks), BOTOX was proven to reduce headache days each month vs placebo. In clinical studies, BOTOX prevented on average 9 headache days a month (vs 7 for placebo).

Based on your progress, you and your Medical Provider will discuss re-treatment every 12 weeks.

When will I see results?

In clinical trials, BOTOX provided a significant reduction in headache days after the first treatment. After the second treatment (at 24 weeks), BOTOX prevented up to 9 headache days a month (vs up to 7 for placebo). You may start to feel results as early as 4 weeks. Over the course of 2 treatment sessions, you should notice a reduction in headache days.

Can I still take acute medication for my migraines once I begin BOTOX treatment?

If your Medical Provider recommends it, you may still take acute medications while you are on BOTOX treatment. BOTOX is a preventive treatment—which means it works to prevent headache days. Acute treatments, on the other hand, are taken to reduce pain once a headache or migraine has already begun.
